Crossing the Heart of Africa by Julian Smith. This design manages to capture the exotic brutality of the African continent without turning viewers off. The pure black background, always jarring, is offset perfectly by the grey-traced map of Africa, within which we behold the title and author in a compatible typography set—bold, white, eroded capitals and flowing orange accents. This color scheme ties directly to what is by far the most stunning part of the cover, the leopard lurking in the lower left corner (whoa, alliteration!). The sleek beauty of this regal creature is only outmatched by its ferocity, seen clearly in its electric eyes. This design indeed displays something of the “heart” of Africa.
